Needed: laundry detergent (plus more cat and kitten food for our hungry little guys!)

Our Adoption Manager Abbi Collins thanks everyone who has been bringing in canned cat and kitten food. She says..."we still need more for our kitties if possible," plus, she adds, "We also need laundry detergent as well, for those coming by the shelter." Hours today (Friday) are noon to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday, 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; Sunday, noon to 3 p.m.; and we're closed Monday (Tuesday through Friday hours are noon to 5:30). Thank you for all your generous donations of much needs supplies at the shelter!

Handsome Jabberwocky: Today's 9News Petline9 Guest Cat, Awaiting His Forever Home at Cat Care Society in Lakewood

Jabberwocky appeared on Petline9 this afternoon with Meteorologist Kathy Sabine and Cat Care Society's Director of Development Suellen Scott.

He is named for the Lewis Carroll book but definitely not a dragon, has long hair white, is very affectionate, loves to pad and purr, sit on your lap and be brushed.

A neutered 8-year-old male, Jabberwocky is current on all shots, micro chipped, and a very healthy 16 ½ pounds. He likes to be up high observing from above, it makes him feel safe.

He's waiting for his "forever" home at Cat Care Society in Lakewood. Check out more photos:

Twenty percent of proceeds from all lunch and dinner sales at La Dolce Vita goes to Cat Care Society on Leap Day. Better yet, the restaurant is participating in Denver Restaurant Week (Feb. 25 through March 9), so Leap Day diners also enjoy selections from a special menu that includes an appetizer, entree, and dessert for two people for $52.80 (or $26.40 for a an individual).

Girl Scouts in Parker Select Cat Care Society's Nibbles & Kibbles Cat Food Bank for Troop 624's Community Service Project

Girl Scout Daisy Troop #624 at Parker's North Star Academy selected the Cat Care Society (CCS) Nibbles & Kibbles Cat Food Bank for its annual community service project. The announcement is made by Diane Stoner, president of Cat Care Society, who says, "The donations filled most of the lower level meeting room area at the shelter and included cat food, litter, cat beds and other cat supplies. The Scouts even made toys for the Cat Care Society shelter kitties."

According to Stoner: "Nibbles & Kibbles provides food and cat litter for cats whose owners cannot provide food and litter for their pets because of a temporary financial setback. By providing temporary help for low-income families with pets, CCS helps owners avoid neglecting or abandoning their pets due to financial concerns. We're so very grateful for the Daisy Troop's support."

Mary C. Tate , troop leader, learned about Cat Care Society and Nibbles & Kibbles in the Girl Scout newsletter for troop leaders. Making the delivery of two carloads of donations were troop members Caitlin Tate (Mary's daughter) and India Choudhury. Cookie Chairperson Caroline Choudhury, India's Mom, assisted with the delivery. The girls also toured the shelter and Cat Clinic during their visit.

It All Starts With A Collection Box
CCS Volunteer Coordinator Jane Dorsey says, "It all starts with a collection box and a successful Nibbles & Kibbles Food Drives take off from there. Our theme is "Fighting Feline Famine" and we believe working with the Scouts provides a great educational experience, while at the same time serving an important unmet need in the community."

The Wild Blue Yonder and Front Range Cat Fanciers (FRCF) will again produce the annual “10 All-Breed CFA Pedigreed and Non-Pedigreed Household Pet” Valentine's Cat Show on February 18 & 19, 8: 30 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day, at the Adams County Fairgrounds, 9755 Henderson Road, Brighton, as a special fund raising event for Denver's Cat Care Society (CCS). It's Valentine's Week at Cat Care Society and We're Celebrating Some of Our Favorite Kitty Couples

Venus & Saturn

At 1 ½-years-old, Venus and Saturn are still very active. They love to play and chase, and are very good hunters. This brother-and-sister pair have been at Cat Care Society since March 2011. They are a bit nervous and may not want to live with small children.

Mickie & Scooter

These 1 ½-year-old sisters are the perfect bachelorettes! Mickie is missing one leg, but it doesn’t slow her down! Her favorite activities are running and “lapping” (your lap, not hers). Scooter is the curious girl and loves to investigate anything new. She loves to be talked to and will perk up and run right to you. They have been together their whole lives and would like to be adopted together.

Biscuit & Buster

Biscuit and Buster are a classic “little old couple.” These 15-years-young cats are active, outgoing, and light up a room with their warmth and enthusiasm. Their bunny-soft fur makes them ideal lap-warmers. They love to be held and shower adoration on you. If you meet them, you are sure to fall in love!

Meet Garth. He is a 14-year-old Tuxedo. He's lived with dogs, cats, hamsters and children. Garth loves to be brushed, held, cuddled and near children. He is micro-chipped. His owners were moving and could not take him with them. He really wants his own forever family.

Today Cat Care Society Adoption Manager Abbi Collins took Bob to Petline9 with Kathy Sabine.

In Bob's own words: "Hi folks, my name is Bob. I'm a big, sweet, cuddly boy. My person couldn't afford to take care of me anymore so I came to the shelter to look for a new home. I'm a very friendly guy and I really love to snuggle. I'm pretty nice to just about everyone. I even get along with those slobbery dogs (if they behave). I'm a senior kitty and what's cool is that because of my age, I'm covered by the Perpet-U-Care Program which will pay for a portion of my health care for the rest of my life. That's a pretty great program and I'm definitely worth it. I'm pretty low key and like to just hang out mostly. If you like to hang out too, why don't we do it together? We could have some fascinating conversations."

"Howdy! I'm Rory. I came to the shelter when I was very young. Now I'm growing up; I'm already almost five whole months old! I might seem a little shy when you come to see me in the kitten room. That's because I am a tamed feral. That means I was born out in the big wild world away from people, so it's taken me a little time to get used to be around people. Even though the people around here don't mean me any harm... still I can be a little bit of a scaredy cat sometimes. Staff Favorites: Mr. Chester & Sapphire -- An Awesome Pair Together

Chester and Sapphire came to Cat Care Society in March 2011 because their owner passed away the day after Christmas. They were very well loved in their home, and their personalities show it!

Sapphire (grey) is very active and outgoing. She loves to run up and down the hallways, and will seek out people to get petting from. She is very busy and keeps herself entertained. She enjoys string and little things that she can chase and bat around. Sapphire is a sweet girl and would be a fantastic addition to any family.

Mr. Chester is mellow, laid-back, and easygoing. He accepts life’s challenges with aplomb. Chester loves attention and gets very excited for brushing. He especially loves to have his ample rear brushed! He will talk to you and update you on the household affairs, and he is VERY good at keeping your lap warm. You will not find a more affectionate (or handsome) guy!

'The board has chosen to close Cajun’s Closet Thrift Shop and focus future efforts on the success of its cat shelter and clinic operations,' said Diane Stoner, president of the society’s board of directors.

Cars for Cats is Cat Care Society’s Vehicle Donor Program. The funds raised through your vehicle donation will support our many programs that help homeless cats.

We have partnered with Cars for Charity, a nonprofit organization, for many years. On our behalf, they will tow the vehicle, process the title and auction the vehicle. The process will begin once Cars for Charity receives all the completed forms.

Your donation will allow you to claim a charitable contribution on your tax return. As of January 1, 2005 if the vehicle sells for more than $500 you can only claim the amount the vehicle is actually sold for. Hello there. My name is Annie Rose and today I went to 9News with Cat Care Society Development Director Suellen Scott.

I came to the CCS shelter last year on the Temporary Care Program when my person had some hard times and couldn't take care of me, but then I went back home. This year my person's health got worse and she could no longer keep me so now I'm up for adoption. I'll miss my person but I know that someone else will want to take me home to love me. I'm very outgoing and friendly. I love to play. I lived with a little dog before and we got along well. I love all people too. I'm just so easygoing. I'm looking forward to seeing you here soon!

Staff Favorite: Check Out Tipper at the Cat Care Society; She's Waiting for her Forever Home

Hello, there! My name is Tipper. There’s a story to that name; you see, I have a condition called Cerebellar Hypoplasia that affects my motor skills, and so I walk funny and fall a lot. But I get around just fine. I like to run and climb and play just like a regular cat. In fact, I don’t even really notice that I’m different from other cats. It doesn’t affect my health; it just makes me extra cute!

I love to be held on your shoulder, and I will come visit you when I am not busy playing. I love to chase things like balls and mice, and also I am very acrobatic. You should see my forward and back flips! If you come visit me at the shelter I will show you all my moves.

I don’t really like other cats and I would be happiest in a home where I have the whole place to myself. I don’t have a lot of special needs but if you have stairs, carpet on them might be helpful! I am just waiting for that special someone to take me home: is it YOU??

They could all be amused at Buck the Cat's amazing cuteness...or the extension of Colorado Gives Day until Wed, Dec 7 at noon. But whatever, it all makes sense today.

Suellen took Buck to Petline9 with 9News' Kathy Sabine this afternoon. As Buck says in his Petfinder profile: "Howdy, I'm Buck. My buddy Biggs and I were left at the shelter after our people lost their home (our home too). It's a terrible world out there when so many people and kitties and other pets lose their homes and have to be separated. What can we do to make the world a better place? We want to help. I know, we can help by sharing our love and sweetness with you. We are still a little shy around new people but we are really looking forward to meeting a new person who will adopt us and bring us home. Home... that's a good thing."

And as GivingFirst.org explains via 9News coverage earlier: "Due to high traffic on its website and technical problems, donors will be able to give to Colorado Gives Day a little bit longer. The Community First Foundation is extending the period of online giving at www.GivingFirst.org/COGivesDay until noon on Wednesday, Dec. 7. Colorado Gives Day was originally supposed to last for 24 hours on Dec. 6. Colorado Gives Day 2011 - Holiday Appeal: Built Around Rescue Cat 'Necklace' For Denver's Cat Care Society

The Cat Care Society (CCS) has built its annual Holiday Appeal around the success of its work this fall with an abandoned 7-year-old cat named 'Necklace' by the Society's shelter and clinic staff. The announcement is made by Diane Stoner, CCS Board President, who says: “We found Necklace in early October abandoned in a dirty carrier outside the Cat Care Society Clinic. Necklace had multiple skin injuries to her neck and face, an ulcer on her upper lip, a broken tooth, and three open facial wounds near her ear, jaw, and cheek. We don’t know what happened, but our team went right to work.”

While under The Cat Clinic's care, Necklace received daily antiseptic washes of her wounds. Gauze around her neck enables her to wear a protective cone, which prevents further injury from scratching. She is starting to heal, and despite all her trauma, Necklace loves to be touched. She will lean in for “head butts” and starts purring and kneading as soon as someone shows affection.

"We are pleased to report that Necklace was adopted to her forever home on November 18. Necklace still has to wear the cone to keep her from scratching her delicate healing skin. Necklace's new "person" was advised by Cat Care staff on how keep her claws trimmed short to aid in the continuing healing process," explains Stoner. "The CCS Necklace appeal is timed perfectly with our Society's participation the GivingFirst.org Colorado Gives Day on December 6. We were accepted as a registered non-profit organization in the program earlier this year."

The Cat Care Society (CCS), 5787 W. 6th Avenue, will hold its annual "Santa Paws Festival," Friday, December 2 (noon to 5:30 p.m.) and Saturday, December 3 (9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.). During Santa Paws, Cat Care Society patrons and supporters shop at both the Cajun's Closet Thrift Shop, located next door to the shelter, and Meow Mart, inside the shelter, for cat gifts like the 'must have' Catnip Banana before venturing downstairs to The Cat Clinic waiting area, which is transformed into a veritable Sweet Shop for the Festival. "Quite simply," Dorsey explains, "It’s the best bake sale in the history of the world—really! And, this year we will also be featuring a Mini Craft Fair with jewelry and assorted artisan items for sale. Plus, we'll serve refreshments, including Santa Paw's famous Cathouse Champagne Punch."

Favorites at the Santa Paws Festival Bake Sale include homemade candies, cookies, bar cookies, pies, jams, jellies, home canned items (such as pickles), boxed cupcakes, Bundt cakes, spiced nuts, and FUDGE—all kinds of fudge. Krista - "I have the softest fur. Have you ever seen a prettier cat? I'm very affectionate; I even give little kitty kisses but I have my moods sometime. Ill help you learn how to know when Im feeling loving and when I just want to have some me time. I don't like a lot of rowdiness. I'd rather have a more mature, quiet home. I'm just biding my time here at the shelter. In fact, Im not crazy about all the action in the main shelter, so now Im hanging out over at the business office. It's a very nice place to stay for awhile but it can't compare to a real home with a wonderful person like you."

Cotton - "Isn't that a good name to describe my fluffy, soft white fur? I was a stray kitty so it's pretty amazing that my fur coat is in such good shape. I'm just 12 years old but because of my age I'm on the CCS Perpet-U-Care program, which will pay for a portion of my health care for the rest of my life. That's a pretty good deal, don't you think? I really like people but I'm still a little wary. Being a stray kitty was a tough life, so it takes me awhile to get used to new people but Im very loyal to my friends. Won't you come visit me? I could be a really great pal."

Ellen - "I was abandoned at the front door of the Cat Care Society in a carrier with my two 12 week old kittens. Can you believe that?! Im really playful and a real cuddler but a little shy at first. Im here waiting just for you. Come visit and I know you will fall in love with me."

When I saw him, it was love at first sight! His big blue eyes got me right away! He got his name Bombay because his eyes are so blue, they look like the Bombay Sapphire, so it is fitting...

Bombay is 4 now, a lynx point Siamese and the most special cat in more ways than one. He has a rare condition where he has suffered bone loss and all cartilage in his legs. Besides being on several meds and supplements everyday, he gets acupuncture and laser treatments once per week. These have helped him keep his mobility and get around; he can’t run and jump like other cats, but he can get in his favorite spots and gets around much better than before he started. It has worked wonders for him!"

Cat Care Society's Mickie and Scooter - 'Please Adopt Us Both!'

Today's the last day of September and we wanted to give one last cyber shout out about lovable Mickie & Scooter - siblings, both brown/tabby mix.

Here's what Mickie (pictured left) has to say: "Hello, my name is Mickie – and that's Scooter, my kid sister, who’s bigger than me. We just turned one year old, and for our birthdays, the staff made us Cats of the Month. When we were kittens, we were found stray – at McDonald’s! My paw was crushed, and not in good shape at all, so the Cat Care clinic had to amputate it after we got here. After that we went to a really good home, but in a few months they had to give us up, so they brought us back to Cat Care Society. Now we are looking for a new home. I really don’t want to be separated from my sister! Please adopt us both!! But before you do, let me tell you about us. I am the calm one. I like to play, but I enjoy the finer things in life also, like being held and purring in someone’s lap. I will stand up on my hind legs for you to pick me up. My sister, Scooter, is a bit more… spirited. She loves to play, play, play – and run, don’t forget run! She also likes to interrupt."

Scooter chimes in: "Hey, I can’t help it if I’m bubbly. And I’m more talkative than Mickie, anyway. I should do the bio. Well I’m the intelligent one, so hush. It’s true, you know. I like books like Homer’s Odyssey while Scooter never made it past Curious George!"

They both say: "Come by and meet us. We promise it will be worth your while!"

Two girls rescued the kitten on Friday and took it to the Cat Care Society. The girls wouldn’t give their names and only said they rescued the kitten at 10th and Sheridan. They said boys burned his whiskers nearly off along with some of the hair on his ears. They were also swinging him around by his tail.

When the kitten came in, his eyes were full of blood and he had internal bleeding. He still has contusions in his lungs and some head trauma."

"A Lakewood cat shelter is asking for help in finding the people who twirled a 4-month-old kitten by its tail, before trying to burn its whiskers with a lighter.

On Friday, Marvell, a male kitten, was brought to the Cat Care Society, after two girls spotted some children abusing the kitten near 10th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard, said Shari Shiffer-Krieger, executive director of the shelter.

"They took the tail and did a lasso movement, swinging the cat around," Shiffer-Krieger said.

His whiskers and ear tips were also singed by a lighter.

Marvell, named after the Colorado Rapid's player Marvell Wynne, was treated for internal injuries to his lungs and bladder, as well as eye injuries and brain trauma, Shiffer-Krieger said."

The Cat Care Society (CCS) is celebrating its 30th Anniversary this year. The announcement is made by Shari Shiffer-Krieger, CCS Executive Director, who says the milestone is being officially commemorated June 5th at Green Gables Country Club with the auction of 17 painted fiberglass cats, each about 28" tall and painted a different theme by local artists.

"Our 30th anniversary art event, 'Tails of the Painted Cats,' has been in progress for more than a year now to raise awareness of our past 30 years of growth and the work going on every day for the cats being helped by our cageless shelter and other related projects in the community," Shiffer-Krieger says.

"Tails of the Painted Cats," the 30th Anniversary Art Event for the shelter cats at the Cat Care Society (CCS), are now on display at the Lakewood Arts Council Co-op Gallery during the month of May through June 4. A public reception is Thursday, May 5, 7 - 8:30 p.m., at the LAC Gallery.

On June 5, the Painted Cats will be auctioned at a Dinner/Auction Gala at Green Gables Country Club. The emcee is cat lover, April Zesbaugh the host of Colorado's Morning News on KOA.
